As a part of their recent holiday at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, the Stokan family decided to take part in Outrigger’s Community Tourism project to build a new Meeting Bure at the local school.
Chris aged 12 and Cassie, 10, were overwhelmed by what they experienced during the volunteer project. On their way back to the resort they asked their parents if they could raise some money to assist the students they had met. Once back in Sydney, Chris and Cassie set about organizing a monster raffle to raise funds. They approached numerous retail outlets for prizes and with their generous help held the raffle, raising AUD$1,450 which equals $2,300 in Fiji dollars.
The money raised was then used to purchase four new computers for the school.
The school principal, Mrs Finau, described the donation from Chris and Cassie as "a blessing from God." “The teachers and the school children will be eternally thankful for the generous support from these beautiful children,” she said.
The school also received a donation of four monitors from Peter Overden from Global Gossip in Suva which allow the Conua students to share the computer screens. Outrigger Fiji General Manager, Peter Hopgood, said it was a generous and inspiring gesture by Chris and Cassie to take on a project to assist the school. “What an incredible example these two young kids have set. It is heartening to see that the gift of giving is alive and well – and it’s not even Christmas yet!” he said.
