Every June, World Ocean Month serves as a reminder of the vital role oceans play in sustaining our planet, communities and economies. For OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels, ocean conservation isn't limited to one month. It's a year-round commitment rooted in our oceanfront destinations and brought to life through the OUTRIGGER Zone program.

From coral reef restoration and native vegetation planting to marine education and beach cleanups, our teams around the world are taking action to help protect the ecosystems that make our destinations extraordinary. During World Ocean Month 2026, OUTRIGGER hosted more than 40 conservation-focused activities across Hawaiʻi, Fiji, Thailand, the Maldives and Mauritius, engaging hosts, guests and local communities in hands-on stewardship efforts.

Here are 10 ways OUTRIGGER supported ocean conservation around the globe this World Ocean Month.

1. Castaway Island, Fiji | Coral reef planting with guests

Healthy coral reefs are critical to marine biodiversity, coastal protection and local livelihoods. Throughout the year, and especially during World Ocean Month, OUTRIGGER supports coral conservation efforts in destinations where reefs are an essential part of the ecosystem.

In Fiji, participants joined coral planting activities designed to help restore reef habitats and support marine life for generations to come.

2. Reducing and eliminating single-use plastics

At OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels, we strive to reduce our use of single-use plastics. Resort guests are greeted with reusable metal water bottles and a reusable tote bag. Complimentary poolside sunscreen in Hawaii is distributed in bulk in a pump. All OUTRIGGER properties have water refill stations, with most in transition to use bulk amenities.

3. Fiji | Creating habitat for marine species

Ocean conservation involves more than protecting existing ecosystems. It also means helping create new habitats where marine life can thrive.

At OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort, teams worked on fish house construction projects designed to provide shelter and refuge for marine species.

4. Thailand | Supporting mangrove restoration

Mangrove forests serve as natural coastal defenses, protect shorelines from erosion and provide critical habitat for fish, crustaceans and bird species.

During World Ocean Month, OUTRIGGER Thailand participated in mangrove planting initiatives that contribute to healthier coastlines and increased biodiversity.

5. Reducing marine debris through costal cleanups

Marine debris remains one of the most visible threats to ocean health. That's why beach and coastal cleanups continue to be an important part of OUTRIGGER's sustainability efforts.

Across multiple destinations, hosts, guests and community members came together to remove litter and debris from shorelines, helping prevent waste from entering the ocean.

6. Maldives | Protecting lagoon and reef environments

At OUTRIGGER Maldives, conservation efforts focused on preserving the fragile lagoon and reef systems that support one of the world's most remarkable marine environments.

Led by resident marine experts, these activities help raise awareness about reef protection while encouraging responsible interactions with marine ecosystems.

7. Koh Samui, Thailand | Supporting marine biodiversity

Biodiversity is essential to ocean resilience. Healthy ecosystems depend on diverse populations of fish, corals, invertebrates and other marine species.

In Thailand, World Ocean Month activities included releasing juvenile crabs into the ocean to help support local marine populations and strengthen coastal ecosystems.

Throughout World Ocean Month, OUTRIGGER properties hosted educational programs that connected guests and community members with the ocean environments surrounding our resorts.
